Bevu Bella is powder made of neem flower and jaggery. It is prepared as a special offering to God on the first day of the new year or Ugadi or Gudi Padwa. Bevu Bella is made differently in different parts of India. One of the ways is to just mix neem leaves and jaggery, another is a variety of pachadi or a drink prepared with raw mango, neem flowers and jaggery (Check out Mango Pachadi) recipe.
There is one more variety of Bevu Bella, which is prepared in parts of North Karnataka such as Belgaum and Bagalkote. Neem flowers are mixed with roasted bengal gram, jaggery, dry fruits and nuts, and seeds. This ready powder is then served with tangy tamarind juice and a cup of extra jaggery. It is first offered to God and then shared with family and friends.
Ugadi Pachadi is a combination of 6 tastes/flavors each representing a human emotion. The 6 flavours are salty, spicy, tangy, bitter, sour and sweet. The significance of making this pachadi is for us to understand and appreciate life and the different emotions that come our way. Eating Bevu Bella, therefore, symbolises the fact that whatever different kinds of situations you face in life, you take a resolution to face all of them with equanimity, react to them with the same, calm and composed state of mind, and not let the situation affect you.
